Monday, 7 Mar - Brisbane
Decide that we need a car to get out of Brisbane and take a look at the surroundings. The first firm I phone has a Toyota Corolla for $35 a day and we go for it. The owner and his wife, it's a local family firm, Carazy on Bridge Street, pick us up at 1000 and we're on the road at 1030, heading for Brisbane Forest Park, which is just half an hour away, north-west of Brisbane. We stop at the visitors centre and get advice on a couple of hours of walks and a scenic drive. He advises 4 walks in 2 different areas: Boombana and Maiala. We add Jolly's Lookout to the list.
Just before the Maiala parking area we stop for lunch at the Rainforest Teahouse and Restaurant. A 'Kookaburga', a sandwich with chicken, lettuce and mayo plus coffee sets us back $19, not cheap but good food in a nice place with the opportunity to sit outside on the deck and watch the birds, which we don't, sitting inside and pretending to be locals.
The walks reward us with a combination of eucalypt and rainforest environments, accompanied by singing of invisible exotic birds on high. Some birds scurry around at ground level and apart from the occasional small salamander, they're the only fauna we can see.
We return a different way, via Ferndale, stopping for some shopping on the way and eating in this evening.
