Wednesday, 9 Mar - Brisbane
No wake-up call this morning, somebody probably complained.
I find a country music station run by indigenous/aboriginal people on the car radio, a good combination.
We're off north-east to the Moreton Bay coastal area, first stop Shorncliffe. Walk on the pier, very peaceful. Chat to a young fisherman from Papua New Guinea. He's just bought tickets to visit Europe and we exchange thoughts on travel. .
Stop at visitors centre and get suggestions. Nice little drive through seaside towns with English names like Brighton, Sandgate, Scarborough and Margate. After that 15 min back on the highway, then turnoff at Beerburrum for Mt Beerburrum Lookout and a good view of the surroundings. It's a very steep 700m climb up concrete path and iron steps. Great views of the Glass House Mnts and the coast. See a big spider, about 10cm long. Plenty of flies around, glad we've got repellent.
On the road again we see TV crocodile hunter Steve Irwins Australia Zoo (www.crocodilehunter.com
After that we drive through Landsborough, Maleny, Montville, Namour, Bli Bli (wonderful name), stopping occasionally but aiming for Maroochydore on the coast.
On the way I recall seeing a sign saying that Simpson camped there. Wasn't he the one who was involved in a disastrous expedition across Australia in the 19th century?
At Maroochydore we finally eat a non-asian meal, Cod & Chips ($11). After that we let the Pacific pacify us for 30 min. Plenty of surfers, lit up by the low afternoon sun shining from behind us on the beach into the sea.
We pass through another coastal town, Mooloolaba (another great name), on the way back to Brisbane. 16l petrol gets the car back to where we started from and we return it at 1930 having done 755km in 3 days.
Tomorrow we fly to Auckland, NZ.
Costs in Brisbane: $410 lodging + $105 carhire + $56 for 58l of petrol + $200 food etc = $771 = 459 euro = 92 euro per day. Seems surprisingly low considering Bangkok was 88.
