Thursday, 10 Mar - Auckland
A query at check-in about Marijke's name on the ticket versus her name on the passport is about the only excitement the morning has on offer. Immigration doesn't seem bothered though.
We're on a 747-400, which seems big for the 3 hours to Auckland but for some that's just a stop on the way to LA, 16 hours further down the road.
Chat to the couple behind us, both from the USA and retired but nothing as exciting as a NYPD detective, they were in Insurance and Real Estate. Now fervent RV'ers, following the sun and just finishing a month in Australia. They don't seem to have covered a lot more distance than we have but admit they like staying at places for a long time. She said she could easily spend another 2 weeks in Brisbane. And I thought 2 days was enough!
We're seated in row 71 almost at the back in, where the seating is 2-4-2 instead of 3-4-3. Must remember that for our next 747-400, from Hong Kong, and check in early in order try for these seats (rows 70-74).
Get some reasonable aerial shots of Brisbane, Gold Coast and Auckland.
Landed in Auckland at 1800, 3 hours earlier than Brisbane and 12 hours difference with Amsterdam, we ATM $300 (€165) and phone our lodging close to the airport, Skyway Lodge (www.skywaylodge.co.nz , $65), from the freephone at the airport and they pick us us within 15 min. Friendly couple who run the place do their best to make us feel welcome, directing us to a Chinese that does fish and chips where we get a $5 'Special A' comprising 2 pieces of fish, 4 potato fritters and some chips. Plenty for us and we eat it in the communal dining room and lounge. They also have kitchen facilities for their guests. Pick up some maps and other tourist info.
Chat briefly to a young couple from Iowa who were also on the plane and who've just finished doing some missionary work in - I believe - Papua New Guinea.
Shopping: a loaf and some cheese provides for $5 provides us with our breakfast and lunch tomorrow. 3 cans of $3 beer.
It's cooler here than in Brisbane, low 20's during the day and down to 15c at night.
